if we manage to get this right they'll surrender by early light
344 // open! | Leopardpaw let her paws gude her through the familiar pine forest as her thoughts wandered elsewhere. The biting sickness was finally over, and she could honestly say that she was grateful for the Great March. There was no saving those sick cats, and there really was no other way to save everyone else. It was for the best. But, as that thought crossed her mind, a cold breeze drifted by, lifting her short for and sending a shiver down her spine. Honor the dead, it seemed to whisper, and their sacrifice.
Then, as quickly as it came, Leopardpaw shook the chill, and its advice, away. Headstrong as always, she felt far from inclined to bow to any cat, much less any already six feet under. Lifting her head up high, she trotted past the trees, the sweet, musky scent of the outdoors surrounding her as she moved. Today was a day for herself. Most of the other cats were back in camp, helping make everything functional once more. But, Leopardpaw had enough of sitting around and putting her nose to the grindstone; she needed a break, and by Starclan's name she was taking one!
Suddenly, the wind blew by again. This time, however, it lacked any foreboding premonitions, and brought a promise of better times. The scent of a rat was on the breeze, and, even though Leopardpaw much rather preferred frogs or lizards, a meal was a meal. She wasn't going to complain. Following the smell upwind, Leopardpaw stopped as she caught sight of the prey nosing around at the base of a tree, no doubt searching for grubs to feast upon. Dropping into a hunter's crouch, she crept closer, paws light upon the marshy floor, belly floating just above the ground as to avoid brushing any debris under her. Taking one step forward, then two, and then a few more until she was close enough to pounce, she tensed the muscles in her hind legs in preparation. This rat is mine, she thought victoriously as a triumphant grin spread across her lips. |

| [attr="class","sorry"]It was no question that the Great March caused certain tensions to rise about camp. Several cats lost their loved ones. Although Spiderleap sill stood conflicted on where her feelings for Applefang were concerned. Not that it mattered much now to the black she-cat. What's done was done, there was little use in pining over 'could haves' and 'has beens'. The warrior refused to become the very same decrepit feline her mother had been. Unable to bear the thick silence while the clan went about their duties, Spiderleap was among the first to offer herself in duties stemming outside the camp. Namely hunting.
Ever since the Great March the forest had seemed more eerie; perhaps it was just machinations her mind conjured following the unexpected exile of several of their family members. "Why am I still thinking about this." she huffed, ears pressed flat against her head. 'There's no point, the outcome's quite obvious at this point...you're sick, you're out.' Spiderleap couldn't afford letting herself form more emotional attachments. Who knew? Maybe the next unfortunate feline to meet the same fate would be her. By some cruel twist of irony.
"Hm?" Two distinct scents wafted on the breeze. On of which she found rather familiar. It seemed she was the only cat who sprung out of camp. The other scent aptly spelled prey. A sly smirk creased her maw. With a spring in her gait she quickly and silently pursued the scents, gaining some vantage on a low-hanging branch. From her perch she caught sight of Leopardpaw, and in following the apprentices line of sight came across the object of her attention. Spiderleap's claws flexed in apprehension, having to stop herself from leaping onto the scene and taking the rodent's life for herself. However, she supposed she could find some enjoyment in this little scheme.
Confident she was hidden from view; she took a thin, wayward branch between her jaws and bit. The abrupt snap brought the rat to attention, now it was far more aware of it's surroundings and should have proved more of a challenge to the younger cat. or at least that's what Spiderleap would say, honestly she just felt like causing a bit of drama in this otherwise dull period of time. |

406 // Spiderleap // I apologize for my smol, angry child LOL. | Just before she sprang at it, a sudden crack caused the rat to while around in a frenzy. Eyes wide, it caught sight of her sitting barely a tail length away, and, with a wild squeak of fear, turned to run away. Realizing it was now or never, Leopardpaw pounced, but fell just short of the rat as it dashed away nimbly. Scrambling to readjust, she chased after her prey, claws digging deep into the ground as she scrabbled at the soft dirt, searching for any purchase. Finally finding her footing, the apprentice shot after the rat like a rocket, and just barely managed to bowl it over just before it disappeared into its burrow in the base of a pine tree. It was a messy kill, with bloody, torn fur and a high, wailing cry of pain. The rat’s small body had deep scratches from where Leopardpaw had dug her claws in, trying to hold it still before she bit deeply into its neck, ultimately putting it out of its misery.
With that said and done, she got to her feet, scowling at the mud and debris stuck to her fur. She had, no doubt, picked it up during her tumble. It simply wouldn’t do for her to go back to camp like this, but, just as she settled in to give herself a quick cleaning, Leopardpaw froze as she recalled the reason for all of this in the first place. There was a crack that had alerted the rat to her presence. But, she had not made a sound, that the apprentice was sure of. So, what had? Scenting the air, Leopardpaw couldn’t pick up on anything but the rat and her own scent, so, instead, she took to scanning the area nearby. Her eyes narrowed as she searched, until she glanced up and noticed the familiar warrior sitting in the tree overhead. Spiderleap, she growled as she glared, expression dark and jaded.
“What was that for?” she yowled challengingly, the fur along her spine rising to attention as her ears laid flat against her skull. Deep down, she knew better than to anger a warrior. They had more standing than her, and, if she was reported, Froststar would have been exceedingly happy to dole out a harsh punishment. But, Leopardpaw, all action and little forethought, didn’t care. “I would have caught that rat easily if you hadn’t decided to come lumbering in here!” |

| [attr="class","sorry"]In light of Leopardpaw's show of aggression Spiderleap showed nary a reaction save for the rising glint of amusement in her orange eyes. "Heh, that's a scary look on your face there." she mused. "I was only helping you out, y'know." Raising her body off the branch the black female gave a languid stretch before descending onto the forest floor. It was a funny sight she had to admit. Watching the young apprentice flail about through the fallen leaves like an over-excitable kit.
"You were waiting far to long to act." Too long for her anyway. Spiderleap was rather impatient when she wasn't the one hunting. Watching was such a bore, sadly this was a habit Applefang had tried to knock out of her but ultimately failed. "Wait too long and you miss your chance." The warrior plodded all to happily to Leopardpaw and her catch. "I don't see what you're complaining about though, it was a fine kill. Even if you looked like a spastic fish." she commented. "Almost as good as mine." The last part was spoken with a muted playfulness as she eyes the unfortunate rat's corpse.
"I'd ask you what you're doing so far from camp given the rest of the apprentices were hauled into helping around the place but," her whiskers pursed. "Seems I found my answer." Spiderleap gave a drawn out hum. "Hunting for necessity or boredom though, I wonder. Does anyone even know you're out here, Leopardpaw~?"
Ooc: Omg Spiderleap you just don't stop talking. Your smol angry child is precious shhh. |

560 // Spiderleap // LMAO Leopardpaw can't seem to stop either | The more Spiderleap spoke, the more riled up Leopardpaw became. She had left camp all on her own in order to escape from her annoying clan mates, but it appeared as though one had found her anyways. “Heh, that’s a scary look on your face there.” Leopardpaw only draw her lips back further as she was very blatantly aware that the warrior was patronizing her. “I was only helping you out, y’know.” Watching as Spiderleap dropped nimbly to the forest floor, Leopardpaw scoffed and turned away, her nose high in the air.
“I don’t need your help,” she said, voice as dry as the lizard’s corpse that had been left at the bottom of the fresh-kill pile and forgotten about for over a moon. “And I was hunting just fine!” She was quick to jump on the defensive as Spiderleap took a jab at her hunting technique. It was how her previous mentor had taught her after all, before he had been exiled in the Great March; she was to use her light paws to her advantage, creeping up on her prey until she was barely a few steps away before going in for the kill. That way, she had a better chance of catching it, and she would be close enough to react in case anything happened. So, for this she-cat to come in and start insulting her skills without any precedent was wonderfully apt at rubbing Leopardpaw’s fur the wrong way.
“I don’t see what you’re complaining about though, it was a fine kill. Even if you looked like a spastic fish. Almost as good as mine.” Glaring at Spiderleap mutinously, Leopardpaw held her tongue as she bit back a scathing retort. If you thought that was a fine catch, she thought, eyes blazing with a fire she didn’t bother to hide. Then you must not be a very good hunter.
But, it was Spiderleap’s next words that brought a startling clarity to the apprentice’s anger-muddled mind. “Hunting for necessity or boredom though, I wonder. Does anyone even know you’re out here, Leopardpaw?” As the warrior spoke her name, she finished her question with a sly lilt of her voice. Spiderleap knew she had Leopardpaw right where she wanted; the apprentice had snuck out of camp without so much as a note saying where she had gone. She was shirking her duties, and, if anyone found out, she was sure to be punished. What if they confine me to camp for a moon? She reflected upon the possible consequences with a sense of dread, blood running cold in her veins. Or, worse, what if Froststar decides to delay my warrior ceremony? Eyes widening with panic, she struggled to swallow down the lump in her throat, flexing her claws and digging them into the ground nervously. But, as she glanced up to meet Spiderleap’s conniving gaze, Leopardpaw knew that she would rather suffer any punishment than give the warrior what she wanted to see. So, forcing back the rising fear, Leopardpaw composed herself once again and spat, “What’s it to you anyways? I see you're out here, and not even hunting either.” Snatching her rat up in her jaws, she turned away swiftly and began heading back in the direction of camp, calling over her shoulder, “If anything, you're just wasting your time, interfering with another cat’s duties!” |

| [attr="class","sorry"]Truth be told perhaps Leopardpaw was hunting just fine, but impatience was just that; impatience. However, Spiderleap didn't see anything wrong with granting the younger cat a little challenge to test her wits. And needless to say the black she-cat was impressed. Perhaps more so were Leopardpaw's quarry a smaller creature rather than a bulky rat but nevertheless it was just as nimble as it's smaller cousin the mouse. "Well regardless of how well you may or may not have done - we'll never know now," Spiderleap began, tail giving several lazed swishes. "Challenges will give you more experience." she chirped. Great now she was acting like a mentor. The cat suppressed a shudder.
Spiderleap may have been somewhat of a recluse when it came to the socializing many did in the clan but if there was one thing renowned, even by her, it was Leopardpaw's temper. The apprentice was somewhat infamous in that regard. Such was the reason she didn't take any personal offense to the younger feline's little tantrums. Leopardpaw's outbursts became almost predictable now, to Spiderleap anyway. The warrior was beginning to think there were very few who actually got along well with the tabby. 'She'll never find a mate with that temper.'
Silently snickering at her thoughts Spiderleap decided the deceased rat wasn't worth much more of a look. Though she may have acted nonchalant, she didn't miss the sudden awareness that crossed Leopardpaw's face following her little revelation to her doing outside camp. Spiderleap was a trickster by nature, the type who likes to poke fun and have the odd laugh now and then. Yet there were times she found herself slipping into things akin to blackmail. Such as this.
Exhaling, she righted her previously slumped posture. "Touchy, touchy," she whined. "As a matter of fact I was out here hunting myself before I came across your suspicious scent." After all it was only right for a warrior like herself to investigate such suspicions. A wayward apprentice was most certainly on that list. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you were out here," Spiderleap let her sentence drift before a sly grin spread across her face. "Alone that is!" She bumped Leopardpaw's shoulder with her paw. "C'mon, hide your kill. If you're going to go wandering around out here it'll be with me." Seeming almost proud of herself Spiderleap trotted forward a slight and took to scenting the air for any prospective prey. She would have suggested Leopardpaw return to camp with said rat carcass; but that would have involved an explanation she wasn't too certain the apprentice had.
Ooc: Well that just happened! |

405 // Spiderleap // Spiderleap has so much over Leopardpaw's head; she hates it LOL | “Touchy, touchy.” Leopardpaw growled under her breath, but stopped walking away as Spiderleap continued to speak. “As a matter of fact I was out here hunting myself before I came across your suspicious scent.” The apprentice’s hackles began rising once again in response to the warrior’s teasing, but she froze in her tracks at Spiderleap’s unexpected decision. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone you were out here.” Glancing back uncertainly, Leopardpaw stared straight into Spiderleap’s orange eyes. It seemed too good to be true that she was being let off the hook so easily, and her doubt was proven correct when Spiderleap added, “Alone that is!” Hissing furiously when the warrior prodded her shoulder, Leopardpaw glared resentfully at Spiderleap’s sly expression as the warrior took the lead.
For a moment, she considered just leaving. Already in a terrible mood, the apprentice was hesitant to believe that spending any more time with Spiderleap would help alleviate her sullenness. But, as she mulled over the potential consequences she would have to suffer if Spiderleap ratter her out, Leopardpaw finally relented with a heavy, internal sigh of dispair. No matter how insufferable the warrior was, Froststar was unpredictable with her punishments at best, and the leader was increasingly touchy after the Great March had happened — everyone was aware that she had banished her son, and what had come about as a result of that. So, even though Leopardpaw wasn’t inclined to enjoy Spiderleap’s company in the least, if it would keep her from falling into Froststar’s bad graces, then so be it. Burying her rat and remembering the exact spot, she followed after Spiderleap, noting how the warrior was already scenting the air for signs of nearby prey. But, the forest was quiet, no doubt any animals had already been scared off by the sounds of Leopardpaw's earlier struggle.
Trailing behind moodily, Leopardpaw merely watched and judged, for once silent. Earlier, Spiderleap had commented on her hunting skills, and had critiqued her technique. Now, Leopardpaw wanted to see how Spiderleap hunted, to see if the warrior had any real merit for attempting to change her methods. But, as she scanned the wiry she-cat over, noting her slight frame, she couldn’t help but scoff quietly. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Leopardpaw muttered, whiskers twitching indignantly. “With your body, wouldn't you be better suited to chasing rabbits mindlessly through the moors, like those Windclan cats do?” |
