hands of time DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON Goldenflower was laying in the sun, eyes half closed and breathing was steady and to any onlookers it would look like the Elder was sleeping like usual. It wasn't really a strange sight, to see the old she-cat hanging around the camp and laying in the grass and this specific area had been hers for so long that she was certain the grass had grown parted to fit her very body. But anyway, she looked as though she was asleep but really her mind was spinning with different thoughts and memories that flitted back and forth between feeling so real that even Goldenflower might start to think she was asleep herself but she supposed it didn't matter at her age. Her body twitched a little, her brain was trying to remind her that she shouldn't lay around too much, at her age getting up would become too difficult and she may just have to have an unwilling warrior or apprentice go and fetch her some food from this spot. The idea made her purr out in amusement. With a quiet groan Goldenflower sat up, sleepy blue eyes staring at the seemingly empty Clan-it was sunhigh and there was probably a few patrols out but either way the Clan has seemed empty for a while because of what had happened. Her tail flicked back and forth slowly, she worried about her Clan. Never before in her long life has the future seemed so unsure for her beloved Clan, not that she would let any of these youngsters know how much she cared about them, her nose twitched, scrunching up in distaste at the very idea of that. But they should know by now, she has lived so long and even through so much sickness and death she was still here now. Watching over them, willing to offer knowledge even through bitter words. Goldenflower snorted, head lowering and giving her chest a small lick, her bones ached too often to give herself a correct groom and she was usually too stubborn to allow any of the other Clanmates to share tongues with her but she was a little lonely these days, the silence of the camp echoing in her ears and she couldn't believe that she was wishing for the days when kits would climb over her and ask for stories, when apprentices would whine about getting rid of fleas and ticks and things like that. It was noisy once, hopefully one day it will be again. 0415 WORDS | | @open | | GRUMPY ELDER INCOMING |

Hawkfall panted tiredly as he trotted into the hollow that had been his home his entire life. In his mouth, he carried a rabbit. The fresh-kill was still warm, and dangled limply between his jaws. The chase had been hard; the bulky warrior was not exactly built for sprinting across the open moors, and he tired very easily. But, with the Clan still recovering from the biting sickness, Hawkfall knew that every piece of prey was important, and that, as a loyal warrior, he had to give his all to his duties. That, however, didn’t mean that he wasn’t exhausted, and, as he dropped the rabbit on the fresh-kill pile, he reveled in the fact that he had no more assignments for the rest of the day. Maybe later, he thought, I’ll hunt again. But, for now, he was going to enjoy a good rest.
About the retreat to his nest in the outskirts of camp, Hawkfall paused, his jade-green eyes watching contemplatively, as he spotted Golderflower’s idle form. At first, he had assumed that she was enjoying a midday nap — a reward she had every right to after supporting Windclan for all her moons. Yet, moments later, she sat up and glanced around as though searching for something. And, even though the moment was brief, Hawkfall felt a twinge of regret, knowing fully well what she was looking for. It was, after all, the exact same thing he had spent many nights staying up late trying to imagine was before him once more; even though he had never particularly minded the breeze, evenings seemed just a little bit colder without the pelt of a clanmate nearby.
As Goldenflower leaned down to smooth the fur along her chest, Hawkfall averted his eyes thoughtfully, and began to wonder when the last time the elder had a chance to enjoy a proper grooming was. Usually, searching the elders for ticks and fleas was an apprentice’s task, but with most of the Clan gone, there were few apprentices available to take up the mantle. And, even though she tried to hide it, there were telltale signs of her old age. She was no longer as springy as she used to be. She never moved as fast, and she struggled to twist far enough to groom her back. And, even though he had left behind his apprenticeship, even though his paws were heavy from fatigue, Hawkfall figured that, as one of the youngest warriors, he should be doing his fair share of work.
“Hello, Goldenflower,” he meowed, dipping his head in greeting as he approached her. “How are you doing this afternoon? Have you eaten yet?”

hands of time DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON There were much more important things to deal with than herself, Goldenflower was sure of that, there had to be priorities to set straight and making sure that she was properly groomed was definitely not on that and she was okay with it, she usually was very stubborn about dealing with herself by herself though in the recent moons she had let the apprentices do it(though with a lot of back talk of course). Her tail wrapped around her paws, she stared down at them and for a moment was lost in thought. Life used to be a lot easier for her, it was hard to remember a day when her body didn't ache but she knew it used to happen, could remember how she bolted after rabbits on the moor. Her ears twitched back, it had been so long since she felt so free, since her body had allowed her to move so easily through the land. When was the last time she even managed to leave camp? Or went to a gathering? The island was too far now, she refused to be a burden and for many moons has just been listening to the idle gossip and never joining in. Words filled her ears, her eyes snapped to the warrior who approached her and a name came to mind; Hawkfall. She remembered him, from his kithood and apprenticeship she could picture it clearly. He has gone through much for being as young as is his, losing so many in such a short amount of time, she could only imagine how he must be feeling but he was here to talk to her, to try and help her. Goldenflower stared at him for a moment longer, not a cold stare but more of one that was contemplating. Warriors tried their hardest to be strong, to overcome emotions because that was what they were expected to do, bad things happened and they were just supposed to overcome it. How cruel of an idea. "Hawkfall." She greeted finally, whiskers twitching a little, "You seem out of breath, I suppose we're desperate enough to have you chasing down rabbits now huh?" It was a joke, there was a hint of bitterness and maybe envy in there but that might be expected by now and shouldn't be taken so seriously. There is no easy way of bringing up what had happened to not only their Clan, but to all of them, every single cat has lost someone but it was as if they all tried to pretend nothing has happened and so everyone ignored it as if it would go away and the wounds would heal. There was no medicine cat good enough to heal that, no poultice to place around the heart and it was something Goldenflower has learned all throughout her long life. "I've eaten more than enough in my life to make up for not eating a little." She says honestly, the food can go to the ones who will make the Clan strong, who need the extra burst in their step. She stares at the entrance of the camp, wistful and full of regret that she couldn't have left when it all happened. "How have you been Hawkfall?" She turns her gaze back to him, bright blue eyes staring at him with a look that says exactly what she means. No one else may want to talk about what has happened but StarClan knows that Goldenflower is much too old to care about what anyone wants. 0587 WORDS | | Hawkfall | | SPREAD THE HAMILTON LOVE! |

As Goldenflower’s observant gaze washed over him, Hawkfall sat up straight, as still as a statue. Carefully hiding his exhaustion, he placed a pleasant smile upon his lips, and waited gracefully for the elder to speak. “Hawkfall, you seem out of breath. I suppose we’re desperate enough to have you chasing down rabbits now huh?” Chuckling at the jab, Hawkfall dipped his head in faux embarrassment.
“I apologize for my dismal hunting skills,” he joked back. “But, I should hope that practice can only help me improve.” Then, as he paused for a moment, his expression turned serious. “It’s important that you eat too, Goldenflower,” he cautioned, shifting his weight uncomfortably at the action of lecturing an elder. It wasn’t his place, but he wanted to make sure that his clanmates were taking care of themselves as best they could. In this time of need, the most important practice was for everyone to stick together.
Watching as she turned her blue eyes to the camp’s entrance, Hawkfall examined the range of emotions swirling in their depths. They were so complicated; entwined in one another, they were a mix of ingredients bubbling together in a crucible, and he had no better chance of telling one from another than he did at finding a cure for a broken spine. For a moment, it was uncomfortable to be there in that moment, and he was suddenly painfully aware of his youth, and how he failed to match up to the she-cat across from him. She had been born so many moons before him, and had watched even his mother grow from kit to warrior to queen. Goldenflower had watched so many of the clan pass away, moon after moon, as her friends left her one by one. And, now, she was one of the last elders in the Clan, confined to a barren camp with no kits to watch over fondly, and no apprentices to entertain. How lonely a life it must be, he contemplated, wondering if he could ever imagine himself living through something like that and coming to a conclusion. No, no I can’t.
Then, all thoughts of pity were forced out of his mind as Goldenflower suddenly fixed him with her knowing gaze, asking him a loaded question about the topic nobody wanted to face. The bluntness of the situation threw him off balance, and he blinked at her in surprise before composing himself once more. That’s right, how could he have ever thought to feel sorry for her? She wasn’t someone who wanted the empathy of others; Goldenflower was strong, and she proved it time and time again as she lived through some of the best and worst times Windclan had ever seen. Hawkfall was getting ahead of himself, making false assumptions; Goldenflower had fight in her yet.
“I’ve been well, I suppose,” Hawkfall answered, choosing his words carefully after a cursory glance to make sure that there wasn’t anyone else within range. “It has been hard, but nobody made it out of the… situation without having lost someone dear to them. I am not alone.” And, he wasn’t. But, even so, his throat suddenly clenched, and he had to take a deep breath to clear it. “But, the Clan has been recovering, and I’m sure that we will be fine in time.”
